Preemie or Doll Items

Berry Blankie (18″)
This pattern is written with no abbreviations so a crocheter with basic skills can complete it easily. Crocheter must know chain and single crochet. Berry Stitch instructions are provided.

Preemie Heart charts – adjust size with yarn and hook

So many people asked for this that I decided to add it here as well as the square page. There is a chart for three hearts with written instructions. You can use these individually as a tiny blankie or make several and assemble into a larger blanket. The squares are NOT the same size so cannot be added together in the same blanket without altering. The yarn, hook and edging are left up to you.

Wordless Preemie/Doll Afghans

The purpose of the Wordless Preemie/Doll Afghans is to share the gospel message in a fun, non-threatening way to children and their parents. I have given these as gifts, used them at church fundraisers, and various other occasions. I have never seen wordless afghans anywhere else, though some may make them that I am unaware of. They are based on the very well known wordless book. Some also make bracelets, which I believe are called power bands, using beads in the appropriate colors. We’ve done this for VBS many years.  There is more information about the wordless idea below the patterns.

I’m including these patterns on this page to limit the number of new pages I have to create as I think there is a limit here as to have many you can have. You can certainly use the patterns in any color you want to.

About Wordless Afghans

The colors of the afghan are gold (heaven), black (sin), red (blood of Jesus), white (purity, cleansed from sin), blue (baptism), and green (growth). Some add purple (royalty) with the gold. I have not done so in the doll afghans simply because of size considerations. These colors can be adapted to many items. You could make strips for a full-size afghan or make a scarf using these colors. I’ve done both.

A little poem has been written to be included with the blankies. It has been donated to the cause by the author, who chooses to remain anonymous. You are given permission to include the poem with your project.

Wordless Poem

I have a little blanket,
I love to hold it tight;
For hidden in its colored stripes
Is a great delight.

Each color holds a piece, you see,
Of a story dear and true;
And because I love it so,
I’m sharing it with you!

GOLD is for the precious gold
With which the streets are paved,
In Heaven above, where all will go,
If sure they have been saved.

But saved from what, you may well ask,
That too, my colors tell;
BLACK is for our stain of sin,
For which we merit Hell.

But with the next bright color comes
A message that brings joy.
RED, the blood of Christ, was shed,
For every girl and boy!

His blood will cover all our sins,
And wash us WHITE as snow;
If we will just have faith in Him,
And that, we all should know.

BLUE is for our baptism,
A sign of new belief,
To show to the entire world
We’re turning a new leaf.

Last of all, we come to GREEN,
The color of things growing,
As each of us shall grow in Christ,
His glory overflowing.

Now you know the gospel truth
My blanket’s here to share,
About the Christ who died for us,
Our sin and shame to bare.

And if you want to hear some more,
The story more complete,
Ask the one who shared with you
For telling it’s a treat!

The first stanza can be changed to be item specific.

Blanket:
I have a little blanket,
I love to hold it tight;
For hidden in its colored stripes
Is a great delight.

Scarf:
Look at this–my favorite scarf,
It keeps my body warm,
And in its stripes (or squares) a message, too,
Will keep my soul from harm

Bracelet:
I have a little bracelet,
I keep it in my sight;
For hidden in its colored beads
Is a great delight.

In the past, before I had the poem, I attached a very short explanation of the colors. If you like, you can do something similar. Here are some examples:

GOLD represents the golden streets and glory of heaven, where we will spend eternity with Christ if we believe in Him. God wants everyone to go to heaven.
In the Bible, it says: ”Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.” Revelations 2:10

But we can’t get to heaven because of our sin, represented by BLACK, which separates us from God.
In the Bible it says: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

RED is for the Blood of Jesus shed on the cross for us.
In the Bible it says: “…while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8b

When we ask Jesus to forgive our sins and come into our hearts, our sins are washed away. We are WHITE as snow. In the Bible it says: “…the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7b

BLUE represents baptism, being immersed in water to show our “death” and “resurrection” in Christ. Baptism does not save you, but we do it to follow Jesus’ example. In the Bible it says: “Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.” Matthew 3:13

GREEN is for all growing things. It represents growth as we study God’s Word and become mature Christians. We can grow in the Lord by reading our Bible, praying, and attending church services.
In the Bible it says: “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 3:18a

Some people like to add PURPLE to their books. Purple represents royalty. Jesus is our Lord and King. When we believe in Him we are part of God’s royal family – sons and daughters of the King.

Purple is for royalty.
In the Bible it says: Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. 2 Timothy 4:8

If space is a consideration, try something even shorter, leaving out the verses, which you can go over if the person asks for more information.

Gold – Glory of Heaven with Christ
Black -Sin separates us from God
Red – Blood of Jesus
White – Sin is washed away
Blue – We follow Jesus’ example in baptism
Green – Spiritual growth
Purple – Royalty
